Virginia House Passes Death Penalty Abolition Legislation
Delegate Mike Mullin Champions Historic Criminal Justice Reform

RICHMOND, VA — The Virginia House of Delegates passed HB 2263, carried by Delegate Mike Mullin (D-Newport News), to abolish the death penalty earlier today.

HB 2263, which repeals the death penalty and converts existing capital sentences to life in prison without the possibility of parole, passed the House on a vote of 57-41.

“The death penalty is immoral, racially biased, ineffective, and costly. What keeps me up at night is that we run the risk of executing an innocent person" said Delegate Mullin

The death penalty is an irrevocable punishment. There have been over 170 exonerations from death row nationwide since 1973. Nationally, at least one person is exonerated for every 9 that are executed.

“Even one innocent life lost to a wrongful conviction is one too many. It is long past time that we eliminate the the death penalty in Virginia,” said Delegate Mullin.

Delegate Mike Mullin represents the 93rd District in the Virginia House of Delegates. He is an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Hampton and a resident of Newport News.
