Richmond, VA – Today, Schuyler VanValkenburg, Delegate in the 72nd District, Mike Mullin, Delegate in the 93rd District, and Jeff Bourne, Delegate in the 71st District, released a joint statement in support of Governor Northam’s budget proposals for school safety. As members of the House Select Committee on School Safety, they have consistently advocated for improving the school counselor-to-student ratio, their efforts leading to an increased focus on the issue.
“Governor Northam's announcement of $39 million in his proposed budget for school counselors is a victory. Prioritizing the 1:250 school counselor-to-student ratio is vital for the academic, social, and mental health of our students. We have focused on this issue since our work on the House Select Committee on School Safety began in May because we know that the research shows counselors close the achievement gap, lower discipline rates, and improve academic performance. School safety is not just about physical infrastructure. It is about a support environment, and placing more counselors in our schools is essential to the comprehensive approach we believe will make schools safer. We’ve said consistently since we began this work that a student who is safe is a student who is safe to learn, and the Governor’s budget proposals is a crucial step in the right direction."
