Budget Week in Richmond
Our General Assembly session this year is what we call a "long" session, lasting 60 days instead of 45. We have a little bit of extra time because we have to approve a new budget for the next two years. Yesterday was "Budget Sunday" and each subcommittee presented their respective recommendations to the full money committees in the House and Senate. You can see the budget updates here. The House has included Medicaid Expansion in its recommendations! This is huge news for low-income Virginians and huge progress on healthcare reform. Highlights of the House budget include increased funding for cybersecurity and STEM programs, state pay increases, and provisions for new mental health assessment centers. Here's a picture of Delegates Jay Jones and Chris Hurst and I with Medicaid Expansion advocates!
Today, I had 3 bills -- HB 202, HB 1260, and HB 1511 voted on and passed by the Senate! This means that their next stop is the Governor's desk. I am so proud to have had bipartisan support on these pieces of legislation, and glad they have made it through both the House and Senate! I have one more bill being heard in Senate Finance this week, and hopefully then it will move on to the full Senate.
What better to bring people together than wine? Proud to be a co-chair of this caucus!
It was an honor and pleasure to introduce President Taylor Reveley of William & Mary in his final year before retirement!
Hand-signing letter to constituents!
