Thankful for the path these great students are on!
A key tenet of Virginia's government is our balanced budget. We aren't allowed to leave Richmond until this task is complete. As you may have heard, the House of Delegates included Medicaid Expansion for over 300,000 uninsured Virginians in our version of the budget. The Senate, however, has not included this groundbreaking measure. This is definitely the most talked about piece of the budget discussion, and a conference of Delegates and Senators will have to find a way to make the two budgets into one before the budget heads to Governor Northam. The House budget also includes major investments in education at all levels, new initiatives for job creation and economic opportunity, and enhanced funding for mental health and the social safety net. Today, my last bill was voted on and passed by the Senate! This means that its next stop is the Governor's desk. HB 507 allows for a Dual Language option for English language learners to be included in the public schools' Standards of Quality. I am so proud to have had bipartisan support on important piece of legislation, and glad it has made it through both the House and Senate!
HB 507 was brought to my attention by a William & Mary professor and the Virginia Dual Language Educators Network (VADLEN), as Dual Language is already being utilized in our Newport News schools. If you'd like to learn more about the initiative, read this.
Happy to bring a friend to the floor! He's now on his way to Thailand
