How to Help
This is in no way a comprehensive list of ways to help, it's just a jumping-off point. There are many ways to help in our community right now, so it's impossible to include them all here.
The Commonwealth is hiring 1,300 contractors to work as part of Virginia's contact tracing network. Click here to see what positions are being hired (they're listed in the orange box on the left side of the page). Follow the instructions listed to learn how to apply.
VIRGINIA MEDICAL RESERVE CORPS
The Virginia Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is actively seeking both medical and non-medical volunteers. The MRC is looking to recruit 30,000, that's right 30,000, additional volunteers who will assist medical professionals in the fight against COVID-19. To read the FAQ about the MRC, click here. Volunteers can submit their applications here.
THE VIRGINIA PENINSULA FOODBANK
The Virginia Peninsula Foodbank is receiving more demand for its services than ever. The outbreak of COVID-19 has lead to a major increase in the need for the services the Foodbank provides. That means they need our help more than ever. You can give to the Foodbank here.
UNITED WAY OF THE VIRGINIA PENINSULA
The United Way of the Virginia Peninsula is working tirelessly to support our community during this difficult time. They've set up an emergency fund to support COVID-19 recovery and 100% of the money in this fund will go towards supporting outbreak recovery efforts. To learn more about the work they're doing, and how to donate, click here.
Does your business have extra personal protective equipment (PPE) that you aren't using? If the answer's yes then you should fill out this survey put together by the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM). The survey helps VDEM gather information on offers of assistance on increasing the Commonwealth's supply of PPE, tests, or other needed pieces of equipment.
AMERICAN RED CROSS
Now more than ever the American Red Cross needs Americans to step up and donate blood. The American Red Cross has been able to meet immediate patient needs thanks to all the folks that signed up to donate, but we have to keep that up in the coming weeks to make sure that the supply of blood, platelets, and plasma stays steady. You can learn more here.
VOLUNTEER TO BE AN ELECTION OFFICIAL (WORK THE POLLS)
Normally, many of our older community members serve as election officials. However, given the COVID-19 pandemic, it's not safe for many older Virginians to work the polls for the May 19th elections. The City of Newport News is looking for election officials for the May 19th election. You can learn more about serving as an election official in Newport News here.
