Domestic Violence Awareness Month
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Here are some events in the community if you would like to learn more about domestic violence and how to support those who have suffered from it. If you or someone you know is experiencing sexual or domestic violence, the Statewide Hotline is staffed 24/7 and you can reach them at: 1-800-838-8238.
Here's an update on the 11 House Districts in Virginia that were found to be racially gerrymandered: the courts ordered the General Assembly to redraw these 11 districts (and adjacent districts affected in the process) by October 30. Three sets of maps were submitted to the House Committee on Privileges and Elections. Two weeks ago, one of those maps made it out of committee on a partisan vote, and the Speaker called the House back for all 100 of us to vote on the map later this month. Over the past week, Governor Northam vowed to veto this map if it were to pass on the floor in favor of a nonpartisan drawing of the new districts. The Speaker then rescinded our call to Richmond and we're back at square one, where if we aren't able to present a new map by October 30, the courts will draw one for us. Now more than ever, we need nonpartisan redistricting reform to fix these maps and the maps of the future, to ensure that voters pick their legislators and not the other way around. Young Democrats from all over Virginia came out to support Elaine Luria for Congress, and of course the William & Mary YD's too!

School Safety Committee
The School Safety Committee is reviewing over 60 legislative proposals from the work of our subcommittees over the summer. We'll meet again in November to make final recommendations to the full General Assembly for the 2019 Legislative Session. We were able to make many recommendations about mental health and school counselors, which is something to celebrate for sure! Click here to read an editorial from Delegates VanValkenburg, Bourne, and me about making mental health a school safety priority.
